VCC President, Ajay Patel and family at Diwali festivities
Dear VCC community,
This time of year is one of my absolute favorites, as we come together to celebrate Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas. These festivals fill the air with joy, tradition, and reflection.
Diwali, the Festival of Lights, symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. It’s also a time to honor Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and to welcome hope, renewal, and fresh beginnings. Families and communities come together and light diyas to push away darkness and welcome light into our homes. Feasts and gatherings with loved ones make these moments more joyful.
Bandi Chhor Divas carries a message that resonates beyond faith. It marks the liberation of Guru Hargobind Ji, who not only won his own freedom but also secured the release of imprisoned kings. His courage and compassion remind us to think beyond ourselves and act for the good of others. The day is observed with langars (community meals), Nagar Kirtans (processions), and lighting up homes and gurdwaras, spreading messages of unity, justice, and hope.
Both Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas are about connection. They are filled with traditions like exchanging gifts and sharing mithai (sweets) with family, friends, and neighbors. As we light our homes and hearts, these moments remind us of the power of kindness and how small acts of compassion can make a difference in someone’s life.
While we celebrate, it’s also important to pause and reflect on those in need. Both festivals teach us that spreading light in the lives of others is the greatest gift we can offer. Let’s carry forward these values as we work together to build a brighter future for all.
To all those who celebrate, I wish you all a Happy Diwali and Sal Mubarak, and a joyful Bandi Chhor Divas filled with peace, light, and happiness.
