We understand that the need for tree removal around our new building site may raise concerns and emotions within our community. These trees are not just part of our landscape but are cherished symbols of natural beauty and environmental health.
Reason for the decision
The new Centre for Clean Energy and Automotive Innovation is a key component in VCC’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art and sustainable facilities that enhance learning and foster innovation for our students and faculty.
The decision to remove certain trees was not made lightly. After extensive consultation with environmental experts, urban planners, and project architects, and in accordance with City of Vancouver regulations, it was determined that the space these trees occupy is critical for the construction of our new building.
While we must move forward with construction, we are committed to minimizing our environmental impact. Our plans include:
Green spaces enhancement: We are planning to create new green spaces and gardens around the new building, providing areas for relaxation, study, and community events.
When the CCEAI is nearer completion, new greenery will be added to the landscaping with care to reflect the history of China Creek and the historical importance of this land for Coast Salish peoples.
Landscape architects on the project have taken great consideration to include a mixture of local coniferous and deciduous trees, and fruit and flower bearing Westcoast native shrubs and ground cover. References to the confluence of the historic False Creek shoreline and China Creek, and the historic Indigeneity of this location are expressed in the landscape design.
Sustainable building practices: The new building will be constructed using the latest sustainable practices and materials, aiming for LEED Gold certification. This ensures that our campus development aligns with our environmental values.

We understand that change can be difficult, especially when it involves beloved aspects of our campus. However, we believe that the enhancements we are making will ultimately benefit the entire VCC community, providing a more sustainable and innovative environment for everyone.
