National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to again be held Friday, September 30, 2022
Vancouver Community College (VCC) will once again honour and acknowledge the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, 2022. All campuses will be closed on that day.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.
The creation of this federal statutory holiday was through legislative amendments made by Parliament. On June 3, 2021, Bill C-5, An Act to amend the Bills of Exchange Act, the Interpretation Act and the Canada Labour Code (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation) received Royal Assent.
The provincial government of B.C. has advised all provincial public sector employers to plan for September 30, 2022, to again be observed as a day to celebrate the diverse cultures, resilience and contributions of Indigenous Peoples as well as to commemorate the history and legacy of the residential school system.
For those in the VCC community planning for the fall, we hope this information will help inform your calendars. At this time, it is unknown what day, or how, the National day for Truth and Reconciliation will be held in 2023. Any updated info will be shared.
All VCC employees are encouraged to learn more about the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation via the provincial and federal websites.
