11:20 a.m. | Live music | Theda Phoenix, VCC Alumna | |
11:30 a.m. | Keynote: Tools for taking care of our mental health and well-being | Sarah Peyton, Certified Trainer of Nonviolent Communication and Neuroscience Educator | What does research show us is the best way to take care of ourselves? What do isolation and loneliness do to us, and how can we counteract them? Join Sarah Peyton for fun, surprising information on our brains and what they need. |
12:30 p.m. | Chair yoga | Sandra Jara (sponsored by SUVCC) | Practicing yoga regularly provides countless benefits, both physical and mental. The class is for all levels, whether you have practiced before or if it is your first time doing yoga. I encourage my students to practice Yoga with the sound of their own breathing and listening to their bodies, how it opens, contracts, releases and how suddenly with an adjustment they can enter the yoga posture and the experience is transformed. Also, I encourage them to feel the body, aligning it, inviting gently to go a little farther, support it, and explore the yoga posture (Asana) to see what is beyond. |
1 p.m. | Procrastination workshop: Why we avoid doing what we know will be good for us | Mika Maniwa, Certified Trainer of Nonviolent Communication |
Do you procrastinate – do you avoid doing what you know you “should” do? Do you judge yourself as being “lazy”? Do you feel frustrated when you can’t concentrate on the task in front of you? Is it hard to feel compassion for the part of you that may be frozen in terror, alone with the overwhelm? We will learn about the power of empathy and kindness to change our brains. We hope to better understand our behaviours that don’t always make sense. |
1:30 p.m. | Sound healing | Theda Phoenix, VCC Alumna | In this session, participants will be invited to recline comfortably, close their eyes and receive the calming effects of guided sound healing music to support nervous system regulation. We will enter a state of slowing down, connecting to the breath, body and our intentions as the sounds and frequencies of Crystal Singing Bowls and the natural human voice creates a calming and balancing effect on the nervous system, intended to lead to an experience of well being, renewal, relaxation, and peace. |

Skills/Compétences Canada (SCC) is happy to be heading back to Vancouver in 2022 for the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC), which will be hosted partly in person for the first time since 2019 due to the pandemic. This year, the post-secondary and the Team Canada Selection Category Competitions will be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre on May 26 and 27. These two categories include more than 300 competitors from all regions of Canada who will participate in over 35 skilled trade and technology competitions. The secondary competition will be held virtually. This category includes more than 200 competitors from all regions from across the country who will compete in 45 skilled trade and technology competitions.
New this year, check out SCC’s YouTube channel to see the event livestream! Watch opening and closing ceremonies, onsite competitors from different skill areas, highlights from the virtual competition, interviews, and more!
The winners in all the Skill Areas and categories will be announced at the Closing Ceremony.

The competitions for post-secondary competitors will be held onsite, on May 26 and 27, from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Virtual Secondary Competition

This competition will be held concurrently during SCNC, and competitors may have the opportunity to compete in the Selection Event for the 27 Skill Areas that Canada will participate in during WorldSkills Shanghai 2022. Central City Foundation and Vancouver Community College are extremely excited about the return of Fair in the Square, which will provide a much-needed opportunity for all of us to reconnect with our community, while celebrating the vibrancy and resilience of our inner city. The 14th annual Fair in the Square will bring together people from various parts of the city to connect with our inner city neighbours and with the non-profit agencies that are doing amazing work in the community, as well as to enjoy some great live music and entertainment, arts and crafts, an artisan market and free BBQ, cupcakes, watermelon and coffee. Each year, more than 3,000 people join us in Victory Square Park to connect, celebrate and build hope. For a taste of Fair in the Square, please watch the short video recap below of 2019’s event.
VCC has been a proud partner with Central City Foundation and the annual Fair in the Square celebration for over 13 years.
Fair in the Square is a special event that reflects our values at VCC that everyone has the right to be treated fairly and with respect, regardless of socioeconomic background. Through these challenging times, the VCC community continues to work with our DTES community through food security programs with the City of Vancouver.

Vancouver Community College (VCC) will once again honour and acknowledge the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, 2022. All campuses will be closed on that day.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.
The creation of this federal statutory holiday was through legislative amendments made by Parliament. On June 3, 2021, Bill C-5, An Act to amend the Bills of Exchange Act, the Interpretation Act and the Canada Labour Code (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation) received Royal Assent.
The provincial government of B.C. has advised all provincial public sector employers to plan for September 30, 2022, to again be observed as a day to celebrate the diverse cultures, resilience and contributions of Indigenous Peoples as well as to commemorate the history and legacy of the residential school system.
For those in the VCC community planning for the fall, we hope this information will help inform your calendars. At this time, it is unknown what day, or how, the National day for Truth and Reconciliation will be held in 2023. Any updated info will be shared.
All VCC employees are encouraged to learn more about the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation via the provincial and federal websites.

VCC Fashion is pleased to once again be supporting the Herstory in Focus fundraiser of the Downtown Eastside Women's Center. The team will be acting as consultants for the fashion show segment, and will be on-site for workshops and the show. VCC Fashion will also be making masks for the women involved.
VIRTUAL GALA: Includes comedy, a fashion show, musical performances, a silent auction, and much more!
HOST: Savannah Erasmus, “a “Vintage” comedian based in Vancouver, BC. She was raised in Kikino Metis Settlement and Cold Lake First Nation, in Treaty 6 Territory (Northern Alberta). Her Indigenous perspective and “fashion-focused” lens create a fresh and unique stand-up persona that audiences adore. “
SPECIAL GUESTS: Laydy Jams & Maia
FUNDRAISING GOAL: The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre is recording a 50% increase in the number of women accessing services since provincial health and safety restrictions were relaxed on July 1, 2021. Oftentimes, a hot, nutritious meal is a gateway for the community’s most vulnerable women to a continuum of holistic supports to improve her situation. DEWC’s meals program is still mostly funded by individual donations, and their goal is to fundraise over $120,000 to support DEWC’s expanding meals program.
Purchase tickets to the virtual event, and bid on silent auction items here.

Bullying is a major problem in our schools, workplaces, homes, and online. Over the month of February and throughout the year, Pink Shirt Day aims to raise awareness of these issues, as well as raise funds to support programs that foster children’s healthy self-esteem.
Today, wear pink to show you’re taking a stand, make an effort to practice kindness and acceptance, and donate or fundraise for programs that make a difference.

On Friday, Feb. 5, the TRU Sustainability Office invites you to join The Sweater Dance—a virtual living-room dance party intended to raise awareness about climate change.
Invite your COVID-bubble friends and dance the night away with DJ Common Sound on Friday, Feb. 5 from 9 to 10:30 p.m. During the dance, please turn down your thermostat (0.5 to 2 degrees) and put on a sweater to stay warm. Layer up instead of turn it up!
Who can join?
Current students, staff, or faculty members from any of B.C.’s 25 public universities or colleges! Space is limited so register early.
How do I register?
The registration deadline is Feb. 1 at midnight. You will need an official email address from your B.C. university or college to join. Register by emailing sustain@tru.ca and write ‘Sweater Dance’ in the subject line. You will receive a response with a link to the Sweater Dance by midnight on Feb. 3.

Earthquake preparedness at home
More than 3,000 earthquakes occur in British Columbia each year. Most are too small to be felt, but the risk of one big enough to cause significant damage is very real. Participating in the Great ShakeOut is an effective way to better understand B.C.’s earthquake risk and how to prepare.
Drop, cover, and hold on! Learn more about what you should do during an earthquake.

Model Organisms is the talk of the city as Vancouver Community College (VCC) and BC Children’s Hospital present their creative new collection at Vancouver Kids Fashion Week (VKFW) for the SS20 season. Model Organisms is the result of a collaboration between students, alumni, and instructors in VCC's fashion design and production program as well as research scientists in the Healthy Starts theme at BC Children’s Hospital.
This "Fashion Meets Science" team is passionate about showcasing species such as fruit flies and yeast (called "model organisms") that help us learn about genetics and child development.

On September 30, VCC will observe Orange Shirt Day. We encourage everyone to wear an orange shirt in the spirit of reconciliation and to show their support of families and communities impacted by the residential school system.
Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, B.C., in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.
The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations.
Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools, and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

Join us on August 14 for a one-night-only special guest chef edition of VCC's popular Chef's Table featuring Executive Chef Sam Fabbro.
The Chef’s Table Guest Chef Series was initiated in November 2017 to showcase VCC alumni, our culinary arts and hospitality programs, and to raise funds for future equipment needs and student bursaries and scholarships.
As a child, Chef Sam Fabbro began cooking with his grandmother, deciding early on that culinary arts would be his life's path. While attending LA Matheson Secondary School, Sam dedicated a year to culinary training under the instruction of Chef O while also working at Cobre Restaurant.
After attending VCC, Sam went on to work at Restaurant 62, Raincity Grill, CinCin, and Cocktails & Canapés. Rising from Sous Chef to Executive Chef at the award-winning El Santo, Sam recently opened the New Westminster plant-based eatery, Amaranthus, with El Santo owner, Alejandro Diaz.
You'll enjoy a five-course, fixed menu with optional wine pairings. Seating is limited. Purchase tickets early to avoid dissapointment!

Join VCC alumnus Danvee Kwok for an evening of spectacular fare. Danvee's culinary career began with the Glowbal Restaurant Group restaurants, where she moved quickly from line cook to sous chef. She then took the opportunity to be part of the opening team of The Flying Pig Yaletown and Gastown. Recently Danvee has joined the culinary teams as sous chef at Torafuku and Royal Dinette. She loves cooking foods that are nostalgic to her, such as flavours reminiscent of growing up in Hong Kong. Or, her first trip to Japan with family, where the aromas of dashi and grilled fish filled the hallway every morning. These are a few things that contributed to her style of cooking and passion for food.
Your ticket includes a five-course, fixed menu with optional wine pairings.

VCC alumnus Jefferson Bueno will be creating an evening of deliciousness. You might recognize Jefferson as the culinary face of VCC's "Make Your Mark" campaign or from the video, The Master & the Prodigy that featured Jefferson and his instructor, Chef Ysabel Sukic.
Jefferson currently resides in Victoria, B.C. working as a chef catering for over 200 people at one of the provinces largest childcare centres. He devotes his spare time to two of his favourite hobbies - foraging local wild food, and the science behind cooking such as molecular gastronomy.
"I believe that working directly with kids and giving them the opportunity to try a variety of different ingredients at an early stage will promote a healthy lifestyle and food culture for them as they grow to appreciate food." - Jefferson Bueno

The Downtown Eastside Women's Centre (DEWC) presents the third annual HERSTORY IN FOCUS, hosted at the Vancouver Art Gallery. HERSTORY raises support and awareness for the work of the Centre, celebrating the strength and resilience of women in our community. As the night's highlight, women of the Centre perform a live fashion show as an expression of style and empowerment.
This year, the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre commemorates our 40 year anniversary, with a special focus on our meal program, and its long-term support sustaining and nourishing women from the Centre's inception. The theme this year is 'inner essence: highlighting the inner power and unique personalities of women.'
HERSTORY aims to raise $50,000 for the drop-in centre and meal program, providing over 500 meals daily to women. As the sole low-barrier drop-in space in the Downtown Eastside, DEWC provides invaluable sanctuary to women in a highly marginalized community, with the meal program serving as the entry point to the Centre and a continuum of care.
Many VCC departments (including fashion, hair design, makeup, and graphic design) are volunteering their time to support this event. Join us at HERSTORY IN FOCUS in supporting the work of the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre and elevating women's voices, stories, and strength.

Dorothea Hayley, soprano; Catherine Wood, clarinet; Manuel Laufer, piano - Introduced by Gerald van Wyck
Nature, solitude, and contemplation are the focus of this recital. From the burnished lake of Argento’s To Be Sung Upon the Waterto the azure sky of Meyerbeer’s Hirtenlied, to the towering cliffs of Schubert’s beloved Shepherd on the Rock, the songs celebrate the freedom and inspiration of the natural world. Jeff Younger’s new piece, exploring the theme of erosion, evokes the fragile and transitory nature of our earth's riches.

VCC Music is pleased to announce the first Performance Techniques Showcase, featuring some of the finest performances our students have presented this term, as selected by their Performance Techniques instructor, François Houle. This event is not the result of a competitive process; rather, it was created and designed to celebrate the great diversity of musical practices at VCC Music, and to recognize the hard work that goes into all aspects of the music making experience - from planning and organizing the performance to programme note writing and stage demeanour. It also provides an opportunity for students to share their work in an evening concert setting open to the public.
Join us in recognizing the fantastic work being done by our talented music students!

In this world cafe, we will explore the meaning of "primary health care" as a holistic model of health care. We'll explore:
-ways to better engage community members in developing health programs and health promotion initiatives in ways that meet their needs
-ways to work "upstream" to prevent people from getting sick to begin with
-ways to promote people's health through the co-creation of healthy communities
-ways to enable health care workers to work in collaboration with diverse communities and multiple levels of government in this upstream healing and health promotion work.
Come join us for a light lunch, guest speakers, and presentations from VCC nursing students on the health promotion work they have been engaged in, in collaboration with diverse community partners. We'll then engage in conversations across dialogue tables to explore ways that we can collectively advocate for developing our health care system in a way that supports people to thrive in their communities.
