Frequently asked questions

Potential ECCE students need to have the academic capacity and language ability to complete a diploma-level post-secondary program. At the same time, prospective early childhood educators are dedicated individuals with people skills, a sense of humour, and the energy and stamina to fully engage in all types of age-appropriate activities and experiences that are exciting for preschoolers.

ECCE grads work in licensed early learning settings: 3-5 years, infant-toddler, inclusive or preschool childcare centres, Strong Start, family support and school age programs. Some of the titles include: certified early childhood educator, preschool teacher, childcare worker, ECCE supervisor. After years of working in the field, ECCE professionals can become administrators or licensing officers.

VCC ECCE graduates work in licensed early learning settings many of them being hired during practicum. Our partner organizations that host and hire our students include YMCA, UBC, DDA, YWCA, VSOCC and DDA.

The ECCE programs are regulated to meet the competencies set out by BC’s Ministry of Children and Family Development. VCC offers training for all levels of ECCE certification. The ECCE Certificate Program runs as a two-year part-time or one- year full-time program. It is an academic program approved by the Ministry of Children and Family Development

Yes. The ECCE Basic Certificate program has three practicums done in a licensed childcare facility; the second practicum can be done in the workplace. The Post-Basic Diploma program has four practicums. All the practicums have to meet the requirements from the ECE Registry in regards to the number of hours, licensing regulations, the competencies, and the certifications of host teachers.
