Why VCC
Skills practice
The Counselling Skills’ programs emphasize skill development through practice. Students are learning theory, listening, empathy, and more. Then they put these skills into practice in a supportive classroom environment.
Practicum
Students complete a 135-hour volunteer practicum giving them an opportunity to practice their skills in a professional environment. Or they may complete their practicum requirement at their worksite if they are currently employed.
Instructors
VCC Counselling Skills’ instructors have specialized and advanced training in related disciplines such as Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology, or Social Work. Their years of work experience will help students find their place in the helping field.
Frequently asked questions
Support workers have a strong interest in helping people. They also have the maturity, emotional stability, and a sufficient level of self-awareness, and personal and professional development, to be able to attend to another person.
Our graduates work as Settlement Worker, Youth and Adult Outreach Worker, Peer Support Worker, Family Support Worker, and Shelter Worker.
Our graduates work at Elizabeth Fry Society, Turning Point Recovery Society, Directions Youth Centre, Mosaic Employment Programs, and more.
There is scheduling flexibility in the Counselling Skills program area. Students can attend school in the evenings and on some Saturdays while they continue to work. The courses and practicum must be completed in three years allowing the intensity of the schedule to vary based on a student’s needs.
