A Variety of support for young students at VCC
VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Vancouver Community College Foundation (VCCF) is pleased to celebrate a renewed partnership with Variety - The Children’s Charity marked by a $26,250 donation towards classroom technology upgrades. Variety also established the Variety - The Children’s Charity Youth Award, a $3,000 award distributed to six students over three years.
With the generous $26,250 donation, Vancouver Community College (VCC) students in the Adult Basic Education Program for Youth began the semester using a new set of laptops and iPads. The technology upgrades were greatly appreciated as students complete almost all their writing assignments in English, socials and science on laptops. iPads are particularly useful for students studying science as they can provide interactive diagrams and videos to explain human biology, cells and infectious disease
“It's wonderful that organizations like Variety - The Children's Charity recognize the long-term benefits of making an investment such as this technology gift to help us better support and meet young learners' needs,” says Nancy Nesbitt, VCCF executive director. “As many of the students in this program have faced learning challenges and other barriers to completing basic high school education, technology like this is highly useful in providing new and effective methods of learning.”
In addition to the technology upgrade donation, youth across all three VCC campuses can apply to receive funding through the Variety - The Children’s Charity Youth Award. Three thousand dollars’ worth of awards will be awarded to students with cognitive, physical or emotional challenges who are entering a VCC program. The funding is aimed at helping them fulfill their unique potential.
“Variety is pleased to partner with VCC to support students in their quest for a higher education,” says Dave McConachie, interim executive director at Variety - The Children’s Charity. “We want to help minimize the barriers faced by at-risk youth and youth with special needs. We’re inspired by their courage and determination and are proud to give them the support they need to overcome challenges and achieve their unique potential.”
Variety steps in where health care ends, providing direct help to children in B.C. with special needs. For 50 years Variety has been there for families, ensuring children have support to reach their unique potential. Since 2010, Variety has distributed more than $9 million in funding to families in B.C.
