Program Description

All computer stations for students in this program are equipped with JAWS for Windows or ZoomText adaptive software.

Students will learn computer applications and concepts to enable them to problem-solve in the workplace. They develop skills to help analyze and identify application-related problems, implement relevant solutions, and enable them to apply knowledge and skills to new situations. Students are also prepared for employment in entry-level computing positions where skills with Microsoft Office programs are needed. Students will be able to manage and design MS access databases, work with spreadsheets and charts, use the Internet for research and gathering information, design webpages using HTML, and prepare presentations using PowerPoint.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will have acquired the skills, knowledge and attitudes to:

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Take further training in computing
  • Work in entry level office positions
  • Provide help and support to people using MS Office programs

Program Duration

Students may choose to study part-time or full-time.

Students enrolled full-time will have to complete 16 months of training (4 semesters). Students may study part-time but will take longer to complete their program.

Evaluation of Student Learning

Student’s progress is evaluated through a variety of assignments, tests and examinations as indicated on each course outline. Students can expect to be evaluated on their performance on practical assignments, special projects, written and oral presentations, and tests on both the theoretical and practical aspects of course content. A certificate of completion is granted to students who maintain a 70% average in all of the courses.

VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 18 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Please note that you must submit official transcripts and educational documents to support your application; unfortunately, we cannot accept photocopies or fax versions.

Program Specific

Missing prerequisites? VCC offers courses in Adult Upgrading and English as an Additional Language to help you meet your goals.
  • Legally blind or meet requirements of CNIB Sight Enhancement Enrollment
  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent, including successful completion of English 12* or equivalent
  • Keyboarding speed of at least 25 wpm (words per minute)
  • *Note: Any student required to take the Adult Basic Education Assessment must achieve: ABE 60 Reading 52 Grammar 0991 Writing Applicants presenting foreign documents equivalent to Grade 12, whose first language is other than English, must complete an English Language Assessment and achieve results equivalent to English 12.
