Description
This course examines the importance, patterns and characteristics of innovation in small business. It also explores the relationship between information and communication technology and modern business practice, providing both the “classic” lessons, and principles of e-business practices while profiling successful Canadian hospitality businesses.
This course is part of the full-time Bachelor of Hospitality Management program.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify and describe critical aspects of innovation in small business.
- Identify and described diverse patterns of innovation in small firms.
- Identify and describe general aspects of the behaviour of innovative small firms.
- Describe ways in which technology and internet can support innovation in a small business.
- Describe the key elements of an internet business model, and discuss its relationship with business strategy.
- Describe how the use of the internet is evolving to support social networking and information sharing through blogs, wikis and mashups.
- Evaluate the structures for setting up enterprise and inter-enterprise systems.
- Identify the security risks of internet-based business.
- Describe the characteristics of payment systems that have been used on the internet and how billing and payment techniques relate to corporate strategy.
- Explain the e-procurement process and why it is important in today's business world.
- Explain the implementation process for an e-marketing strategy and tactics.
- Describe the development of an e-commerce strategy for a small business.
