This course provides an overview and introduction to the theories and practices of early childhood care and education profession. Key themes include:
1. Types and terminology of child care services
2. BC Early Learning Framework
3. The structure and organization of child care in BC
4. Historical figures and their contributions to the profession
5. Current Canadian and international research, trends and approaches in early childhood education
6. Current issues in the early childhood educator profession
7. Goals and objectives of quality early childhood programs

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain child care services in BC
- Describe the role of the Early Childhood Educator in the provision of quality child care
- Explain the impact of culture and diversity in the provision of child care services
- Explain the concept of developmentally appropriate practice.
- Explain the concepts of anti-bias, theme-based, and emergent curricula in an integrated program planning approach.
- Describe and compare historical and current trends and approaches in early childhood education.
- Refer to BC Early Learning Framework.
