Professionalism (HOCR 0641)

Within this course, students learn about the importance of hygiene and grooming as well as effective work habits specific to the hospitality industry.

Hygiene and Grooming: Students are provided with information on body hygiene, oral and nasal hygiene, posture, choosing clothes appropriate to interviews and the work site, and care of uniforms. Students prepare for their work placements by wearing proper work dress requirements to school several times each month.

Effective Work Habits: This part of the course discusses the types of professional relationships that exist at the work place. The importance of regular attendance, punctuality, following break routines and displaying a positive, professional attitude is emphasized. Students discuss their concepts of positive employee behaviours and compare it to their performance after each practicum. Emphasis is placed on team building, cooperation and taking direction from supervisors. Students also learn about what is meant by quality work, taking initiative and productivity.
