Join us as we recognize and share the history, culture, and perspectives of Indigenous communities in Canada.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding contributions of First NationsInuit, and Métis peoples.

VCC is celebrating by hosting a series of online events and sharing resources to recognize and share the history, culture, and perspectives of Indigenous communities in Canada.

Welcome and Blessing from Elder John
Please join us online to be greeted by Elder John, a VCC Elder-in-Residence, as we begin Indigenous Day at VCC.

Elder John Sam is from the Tutshone, Tlingit and Dene First Nations and has been and artist and wood carver since 1991. He also enjoys participating in ceremony and sharing knowledge by offering workshops. VCC Library is honoured to be hosting Elder John as he welcomes us, offers a blessing, and leads us into the start of Indigenous Day.

8th Fire Series viewing - Episode 1: Indigenous in the City
Join us on Zoom to watch episodes from 8th Fire together – an acclaimed documentary series produced by CBC on Indigenous/settler relations in Canada, weaving together elements from both past and present. The series is hosted by Wab Kinew, from the Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation, who encourages us all to learn, be proactive, and grow in relationship together.

There will be an opportunity to use the Zoom chat function throughout the episodes, and some time to share our thoughts and experiences afterward.
