Context and Purpose

Vancouver Community College (VCC; the College) offers a variety of services to employees, students and the public as part of its academic training and practicums.


This policy outlines the principles for the acceptance and reconciling of gratuities received for services provided by employees or students on behalf of the College.

Scope and Limits

This policy applies to all employees and students offering services as part of academic training and practicums.

This policy does not apply to external service providers who are leasing or renting space on VCC campuses.

Principles


  1. Recognizing the relationship to the institution as a learning environment and employer where employees are fully remunerated and where it is inappropriate for students to receive financial gain in an academic environment, VCC employees and students cannot personally accept gratuities for services provided as part of academic programs and/or practicums.

  2. Whenever gratuities are received, they will be transferred to the VCC Foundation to provide ongoing support to the educational activities of the College.

  3. Gratuities, including cash, may be accepted on behalf of only if they are processed through the College's Point of Sale (POS) system.

  4. Gratuity funds are managed by Financial Services and released to the VCC Foundation.

  5. Any employee or student who fails to comply with this policy may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including dismissal, expulsion or legal action.

Gratuity
Cash or other monetary considerations, given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service.
