Refinish your career. This program, which leads to journey status, incorporates class time, work on real cars in a functioning shop, and a challenging work experience placement. Students are trained to apply and demonstrate collision refinishing prep skills in VCC's well-equipped autobody shop. Earn apprenticeship qualifications.

Program Description

The major portion of class time is devoted to theory, which is presented by means of lectures, demonstrations, and occasional guest speakers and field trips. Students work both individually and in groups. Written evaluation of course content is required of all students. Students are required to apply and demonstrate collision refinishing prep skills in our collision shop in a manner that conforms to industry standards. A segment of the program (four weeks) is set aside for student work experience. The objective of the work experience is to place students temporarily in a challenging work environment requiring the application of the skills learned in the program.

This five-month program covers the following topics:

  • Tools and equipment
  • Spray guns
  • Air compressors
  • Air transformers and hoses
  • Spray booths, bake oven, heat lamps
  • Surface preparation
  • Masking
  • Undercoats
  • Topcoats
  • Solvents
  • Paint preparation and application (complete, blends and spot repair)
  • Paint repairing and colour matching
  • Plastics
  • Pre-delivery

Classes are generally held Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. (subject to change).

Admission Requirements

General

VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens and permanent residents.


As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 18 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Program Specific

  1. Graduation from an appropriate career preparation program or meet the English and math requirements (English 11 or Communications 12 or equivalent).
  2. Math 10 or equivalent
  3. Relevant trade experience is considered.

Recommended characteristics

Applicants are encouraged to spend up to one week in the program prior to applying to determine their suitability for the program and the automotive collision repair industry.
