July 27, 2012Volunteers at VCC pack 17,000 lunches for needy kids

VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Ending childhood hunger: it’s in the bag.
This summer, roughly 17,000 lunches will be bagged inside Vancouver Community College’s Broadway campus cafeteria in support of Sodexo’s Feeding Our Future program; an annual campaign that provides free, nutritious meals for at-risk children who are out of school for the summer. The lunches, which include sandwiches, snacks, fruit and juice boxes, are distributed daily to Boys and Girls day camps in Vancouver, Burnaby, North Vancouver, Langley, Surrey, Delta and Tsawwassen.
“During the school year, many children receive free or reduced-cost lunches through hot meal programs in school,” says Barbara Worwood, Sodexo director of food services. “Feeding these kids during the summer months poses a real challenge.”
Feeding Our Future is an initiative founded and primarily funded by Sodexo, which operates the main cafeteria at VCC’s Broadway campus. Daily volunteers include Sodexo employees and family members, VCC students, staff and faculty as well as community groups and members of the public. Approximately 450 lunches are packed at VCC each afternoon (Sunday to Thursday), refrigerated overnight and distributed by volunteers in the morning.
